I grew up seeing Japanese woodblock prints; they remain deep in my heart for the beauty they create. The abstraction of the cherry blossom motif, created with a painting knife, adds texture and volume. Japanese honor their ancestors with lighted lanterns floating on the water.
I used fluid brush strokes, emulating one of Bernard Cohen’s techniques, in the main panel of this solemn painting. The white ribbon and the yellow medallion in the top margin create the ambience of an announcement of something important or something that should be honored.
